If you like what you see and you have a project in mind then I’m happy to hear from you.

Wireframing tools

Great tools for creating wire-framing for websites are Cacoo and Wix.  Wix is also recommended by W3schools.

I personally prefer cacoo.com better because it gives me more freedom in what I want to design. There are options to choose from templates that users want to design for – tablet (landscape/portrait), desktop, mobile, Iphone, Ipad.

This is what users can design in this program, full mock up of the site but also wire framing (this template was already design by cacoo.com!)

Design/ Color scheme:

Design of this website is not up to date and it is not eye catchy. If you are not fan of the artist, if would not grab your attention and you would leave the site very soon. Enlarging images is done by opening in new window and not by light box which is old way of doing it. Color scheme is dark text is not readable as even color of text is dark grey (not good color combination on this site).

Navigation/ Usability:

Navigation is on the top of page which is easy for users to find. It is done as drop down navigation and it will not work on tablets or mobile phones so this is big disadvantage of the site. Usability is not too good as it took me awhile to figure out how to buy an art. It needs serious updating. However, connection to social media is there and users can get in touch with the artist through Facebook, phone, Skype and email.

Content/ Information:

Content is poor in my opinion as it hasn’t been updated for a while however there are some good photos of the art. Users can find information about the artist’s life, awards, and shows. Also links to galleries that the artist works with.

E-commerce:

Buy art is possible on this website and is done by PayPal.

Design/ Color scheme:

This website is designed amazingly – modern, eye catchy and interactive website. Full site is designed on one page and by clicking on navigation; site moves to page users want to read. Text is followed by favorite mottoes of the artist what express the artist personality and beliefs. Color scheme matches branding of the artist and fits perfectly into the site. It has very professional look and feel. Gallery is done beautifully as users can view the art in light box and also have a choice of making it full screen sized.

 Navigation/ Usability:

Navigation is great as it stays on top of every page and users always know where they are on the website. As soon as you open the site, navigation is at the bottom and after you scroll down it moves to the top. Another great thing is sub navigation on the left site. That gives users easy access to all social media that the artist uses. There is straight connection between Facebook and the site as users can see Facebook comments under every art. Contact with the artist is possible straight from the site by contact form.

Content/ Information:

All information is up to date and users can find all information about the artist, her work etc.

E-commerce:

There is no sign of e-commerce on this site.

Competitor analysis – artists

I focused on artists from England as our clients are going to be competitive mostly with them but also a few artists worldwide, as I don’t want to do limit possibilities of our clients.

Design/ Color scheme:

This website has very professional look and feel. Color scheme changes with clicking on navigation buttons but background (white color) stays the same, which adds professional look to it. Design is simple and it is not responsive which is disadvantage of this website as users cannot view it in tablets or mobiles and get the same user experience as users viewing it on desktop.

Navigation/ Usability:

Navigation is simple and gives users easy orientation (colorful split of sections in navigation changing with color scheme of full site and his name – logo). This way users know all the time where they are on the website and it doesn’t make users think where to click (‘Don’t make me think’! by Steve Krug). There is sub navigation scrolling down in the main navigation but in this case it doesn’t create a problem for users. Sub navigation is always there under main navigation so users can see them while there are on chosen page.

Content/ Information:

Content of this site is relevant to topic of this website and gives users all they need to know. If they cannot find something they look for, there is option of contact the artist straight from the site, which is very good. Exhibits option in navigation tell users straight answers for where they can find his exhibitions and his work which I think works great (simple and straight forward).

Option ‘About’ is just great as after clicking on it, you have choices of viewing his biography – chronologically or illustrated. It is in form of short story telling which works perfectly with users, as they don’t have to read long paragraphs about artist’s life. There are no links to social media, which is its disadvantage, as users cannot look any further for more information.

E-commerce:

Option to buy on this website is there and it is very nicely presented so users will not get confused where to click which is as mentioned above, crucial for good web design. Also choice of currency is offered to users which can be sign that this artist is well known internationally. Shipping & returns, policy notice and condition of use are clearly explained which builds confidence for users to trust and buy things from this website.

Design/ Color scheme:

Design of this website is very playful which can tell users little bit about personality of the artist. Also ‘welcoming feel’ is created straight on home page (making you feel like she’s happy you’re visiting her website by giving you choices of what to visit with nice little sayings like ‘start with’, ‘definitely jump on my (news feed)’, ‘come and hang out with me’ (social networks), etc.). This continues all the way through the site. What is really great about this design is that on every page you click on, there are little flowers saying ‘what I believe’, ‘stuff I love’ etc. which is very good thing to have for new users that don’t know anything about the artist or his/her work.

Color scheme of the site was carefully chosen as colors match the artist outfit on the photo which can have connotation of ‘this is my website, this is my world, I am the artist’.

Navigation/ Usability:

Navigation on this website is very simple and users can find it on top of every page. Layout stays the same on every page apart from shopping page which is kind of good as users can read information about the artist without having to look for it. Connection to social media is also very important and this website is not missing it. Users can add the artist on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. It is right on the top of every page (great usability).

Content/ Information:

All information is relevant and up to date. The artist keeps users informed in section ‘news’. The way that the artist presents herself puts you in a good mood when you read about her because information are presented in funny and positive way which is very good as it keeps users wanting to read more and involve in her work, see her paintings live, maybe talk to her etc.

E-commerce:

There is option to buy the artist’s art on this website and it is well presented. The art for sale is divided into sections which help users easier to orientate through the art.
After choosing art, there is always little info about it, users can have a look at it in light box and buy it. Choice of paying through PayPal or credit card is offered.

Introduction to client project/analysis of current websites

Task for this module is to create a website for the client that will be given to us. We will be working in a group of 5 people.

Clients

Our clients are two artists that are based in Hull – Rob Moore and Adele Howitt. They already have their personal websites but our task will be redesigning them as they need updating.

Current websites

Here are their current websites – Rob Moore

Analysis of Rob Moore’s website

Design/ Color scheme:

Simple designed website in green/black/grey color scheme with white font creates nice contrast on the site. Color scheme also matches other printed products such as brochure. However, font size is small and thus it there is lack of readability. Color of contact form is too bright for this color scheme and it ‘jumps out’ to users. Log in has the same effect like contact form plus different shade of green is used which does not match color scheme of the site. Light box is used for gallery which is very good but in this case it does not create enough of contrast between open image and background so users still see what is behind the image quite well.

Navigation/ Usability:

This website is easy to use as navigation is straight forward and take users where they want to be, does not make them think where to click and that is crucial with navigation (‘Don’t make me think!’ by Steve Krug). However, readability is big issue of this site as mentioned above which makes this site less functional for users. There is option for buying but it is ‘dead link’ that does not work. Contact form is functional which is advantage as users can contact the artist straight from the site. It is not responsive which is minus as users that are using tablets or mobiles are disadvantaged.

Content/ Information:

Content of this site hasn’t been updated for long time so it is not up to date however it gives users overall information about the artist and what he does. Again, readability is a big issue as users cannot zoom it and it is way too small to read.

E-commerce

Option to buy art from this website is there but it is not working.

Analysis of Adele Howitt’s website

Design/ Color scheme:

This website has professional look. Color scheme is simple and matches logo of the artist (white, green, grey, magnolia). These colors fits together well but they need bringing up contrast especially logo as it fades into one. Also text under logo is not readable and after user testing, some of users said they did not notice text there as it all fades in one. Contrast of text needs bringing contrast up as well to make it more readable. Gallery desperately needs photos on first page. Scrolling page to the right after opening any text or gallery is not very good choice of the design as users cannot see photos straight away but have to scroll to the right. However, color scheme on the site fits very nicely with colors of used photos.

Navigation/ Usability:

Navigation is simple and it is easy to orientate on the site. Full website stays on one place and size of it does not change so users see navigation always on top of the page. There is no contact form where users would be able to contact the artist straight from the site, no links to social media and all that needs to be added to interact users with the artist more. Also there is no link for users to buy art work.

Content/ Information:

Information are relevant and gives users information about the artist but also about her work. There are photos of her work but it is missing lightbox gallery where users would be able to experience looking at photos without rest of the website disturbing in the background. Information are not up to date so this is disadvantage of this site.

E-commerce

As mentioned above, option to buy art work from this website is missing.
